CONTACT ME

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to explore and treat lesions within a joint, tendon sheath or bursa.   As compared to traditional ‘open’ procedures with a large incision for access, this procedure is performed through ‘key-hole’ incisions, less than 1cm long.  Through these key-hole incisions, a digital camera and fiberoptic light source are used to evaluate the joint, providing a detailed view of the cartilage and soft tissue structures.  Arthroscopic surgical instruments are then inserted through another other key-hole incision to repair lesions.

Arthroscopic surgery is most commonly performed for the removal of chip fragments and correction of osteochondrosis (OCD) lesions. Arthroscopy also results in improved outcomes for a variety of different conditions in the equine athlete, ranging from soft tissue injuries within the hoof capsule (ex. deep digital flexor tendon tears within the navicular bursa), all the way up to meniscal tears in the stifle.  Arthroscopy has revolutionized the treatment of many joint diseases in the sport horse with shorter convalescence times and improved outcomes.
